Painting provides me with the opportunity to explore what I see and to share this with the larger community. My current work displays people and places I have encountered throughout my lifetime. My intention is to capture a moment in life while expressing the individual story and emotion. I search for imagery that centers on one particular figure and the symbolism or story that person has to tell. The painting tells a story utilizing my unique point of view, while at the same time inviting outside viewers to join the scene.
Joe at the Window (2009) is a small, intimate acrylic painting depicting my husband looking out our front window.
Mixed emotions hide behind this painting. It is meant to be still, stark, and focus on his face. This was painted one year after we were married and he is looking out the window of our first apartment together. He was also burdened at this time by the worries of his mother’s chemotherapy. This painting is an example of the imagery and commonplace moments that, once I've encountered, I feel the need to capture, produce, and share. Joe is just a man standing by the window, but I hope that the viewer can empathize with the intense emotions visible on his face.
Birthday Dinner (2011) is a small oil painting, depicting a scene from my first or second birthday party. The backdrop is the Grandpa Tony’s Restaurant and the clutter at the table alludes to the chaotic yet exciting event from that day. My eyes look toward the festivity which is just outside of the frame. The closeness and space are meant to help the viewer feel part of the moment. I wish for the viewer to share one short instant of calm happiness and to take a moment and reflect on their own life celebrations.
